This image is demonstration of what can be achieved when many images with slightly different focal lengths are combined. Especially in macro photography, where DOF (Depth Of Field) is only a millimeter or two, it's very useful to take many images and combine them to overcome the DOF limitation.
This little Japanese clay horse is about 2cm in length, so in order for all of its body to be in focus, I took 22 shots with varying focal length and used a free program known as Combine Z to stack them up.
The only hard part about this method of photography is to have all your images aligned. In other word, the slightest of movement in either camera or the subject can have unrepairable effect on final image.
Usually for this type of photography expensive cameras and equipments are used. But in this instance I used a rather cheap Canon A640 with a commonly available firmware hack known as CHDK. The combination of this camera and the hack can provide one powerful tool for anything from Timelaps photography, DOF, Astrophotography and many more. If you are interested, get your self a Canon Powershot with Digic II processor, since this hack is only available for the aforementioned platform and not for the newer generation Digic III. I am not biased toward Canon, but no other camera in this price range can do such a magnificent job.
