NutsPosted by Amir (Tehran, Iran) on 26 August 2007 in Food & Cuisine and Portfolio. Fort Worth, TX This image is demonstration of what can be achieved when many images with slightly different focal lengths are combined. Especially in macro photography, where DOF (Depth Of Field) is only a millimeter or two, it's very useful to take many images and combine them to overcome the DOF limitation. These little nuts are about 1cm cube, so in order for all of their bodies to be in focus, I took 41 shots with varying focal length (cover 3cm depth of field) and used free program known as Combine Z to stack them up. The only hard part about this method of photography is to have all your images aligned. In other word, the slightest of movement in either camera or the subject can have unrepairable effect on final image. Usually for this type of photography expensive cameras and equipments are used. But in this instance I used a rather cheap Canon A640 with a commonly available firmware hack known as CHDK. The combination of this camera and the hack can provide one powerful tool for anything from Timelaps photography, DOF, Astrophotography and many more. If you are interested, get your self a Canon Powershot with Digic II processor, since this hack is only available for the aforementioned platform and not for the newer generation Digic III. I am not biased toward Canon, but no other camera in this price range can do such a magnificent job. @mahdi: Thanks. Ken McCoy from Orlando-Daytona Beach, FL, United StatesVery creative use of technology - and great detail! 26 Aug 2007 2:37pm @Ken McCoy: Thanks Ken. @Maysam: Thanks Maysam @badala: I like these color combination as well. Thanks lissa from New York, United StatesThis is nicely done even with such a cheap camera. Wow! 41 shots just for this image. I admire your patience. 26 Aug 2007 5:26pm @lissa: Thanks, but these are done automatically by the camera. I left it for around 5min and then took 30min on computer for processing them, another 2min for resizing and posting. @Michael: Thanks For your visit. @kaveh: Thanks Kaveh jan @کامیار: Hope you liked it. Stan Pulsar from Strasbourg, FranceI'm impressed. 27 Aug 2007 12:28pm @Stan Pulsar: Yea that's pretty much automated process. Once you get the perspective and measurements right. Thanks for visiting. Mohamadreza from Melbourne, AustraliaYou're great man, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge with us all. 27 Aug 2007 12:35pm @Mohamadreza: You are very welcome buddy. Glad to be of help. Thanks for visiting. @Ali Reza: Thanks Ali Reza zoloper from Bucuresti, Romaniaa really interesting process, but 41 shots :O .. gosh .. i better make the aperture smaller and take 3 shots rather than this :P but you say it's automatic and there is no trouble .. donno .. never tried it 27 Aug 2007 8:43pm @zoloper: Yea that seems a lot. But with your camera you either have to do it by had, therefore the introduction of shake or make the aperture small and hopping to stay away from refraction effect. Waiting to see your results. @sandrine: Thanks. @Alain: Thanks for your kind words. |
